That experience taught us a lot about ourselves as women, taught us that we are beautiful creatures, wonderfully made, that we are delicate yet strong and that the world comes into being through us.<br /> <br /> And so I have tried not to think about these young girls who were so brazenly abducted from the cocoon of their of formation in Chibok, Borno State of Nigeria. Their hopes, aspirations, dreams stolen by a thief in the middle of the night. I have tried to think of anything else but these girls yet they remain constant in my thoughts and prayers, I cannot get away from them.<br /> <br /> I have been in shock for many reasons since the news broke, that so many children could be 'abducted' at once, that they are female, that it happened in an institution, that the actual figure of how many girls were abducted cannot be ascertained, that they still remain missing as I write this, a week later, that nobody has been sacked, fired, charged to court for something, anything, mass negligence, gross incompetence, gross stupidity, gross ignorance, gross maladministration, just something, that nobody has resigned, that life has continued for us as if it is just another unfortunate incident and we need to just get over, as we do all other incidents. The more I try to get over this incident the more I regress back to when I was a school girl and the horror of it all is magnified. This will never go away. For these poor girls, their mothers, fathers, siblings, relatives, Christians, Moslems, this will never go away.<br /> <br /> I was once a young girl, now a woman and a mother. I cannot imagine the pain and agony these girls and their mothers are going through right now. All women are in this together and because we have been endowed with the strength, the power to bring forth life, we must draw on that strength and power to see us through this horror, we must draw on that strength and power to prevail and overcome. In one of the chapters he describes an encounter with the ‘masters of the universe’. He was on a tour of the stately home of George Washington, the founding president of America, with Donald Easum a former US ambassador to Nigeria during the first reign of Olusegun Obasanjo. This encounter was during the Abacha/Abiola impasse; in a general conversation, the Ambassador casually asked Mr Ogun what he thought of the on-going tensions in Nigeria, and if he could proffer a hypothetical solution. He allowed himself to be engaged in the conversation when Mr Ambassador then casually asked, hypothetically of course, what Mr Ogun thought would happen if Abacha and Abiola were no longer on the scene? Well, that would be interesting Mr Ogun thought. Mr Ambassador then asked if Mr Ogun could think of a leader who would be acceptable to both the North and the Southwest and thus calm things down. While Mr Ogun was still considering the answer, Mr Ambassador suggested Olusegun Obasanjo, Ogun agreed that Obasanjo was indeed a good choice. Their conversation soon moved on to other more practical and useful things to Mr Ogun’s relief. Three years later, Abacha mysteriously dies suddenly; and as the Afenifere were jubilating and re-demanding their kinsman’s mandate, Abiola also dies allegedly while having tea with the then serving US Ambassador to Nigeria.<br> </div>

STAND BY YOUR MAN

                                              <span style="font-size: large;"><b>           </b></span><br /> During the Monica Lewinsky saga, when the then US president Bill Clinton was found on the frock of Ms Lewinsky and he nearly lost his presidency; the then first lady, Mrs Hilary Clinton, although humiliated, came out to support her man. She was dignified and subtle. Back then feminist were aghast, they could not believe it, how can such an educated woman put up with this? They expected her to give him the boot. Hilary was much wiser than them all. She 'stood by' her husband and remained the first lady till the end of his tenure, went on to become a senator and then Secretary of State under President Obama. She is also in the running for the plum job when Obama is done. She wasn't going to give all that up because of the indiscretion of Bill! She understood that she could not remain as first lady without her husband as president! Republicans were humiliated and defeated.<br /> <br /> Dame Patience too has come out to stand by her man and give him the support she can in this most challenging of times we find ourselves as a nation. One cannot help but have sympathy for the president. The man seems to be overwhelmed and his Mrs knows best what he is going through and that may be why she has come all out. But she needs very good advisers, strategists, friends and counselors at this time more than at any other time. And she needs to take good advise. She must be careful so that her support for her husband does not turn out to be support for his foes. Someone needs to tell the first lady some bitter truths. Do not undermine your husband. Stop setting up parallel courts with him. Her team need to remind her that she is on the world stage and not in the market square in Okrika.<br /> <br />  Patience Jonathan should urgently overhaul her whole team of advisers, media aides, strategists etc, she should sack them all for the ridicule they put the first lady and Nigeria as a whole through. How can they stand by and allow the poor woman make such a harrowing spectacle of herself. Why did you all stand by and let her usurp the powers of her husband publicly. Wives usurp their husbands powers everyday all over the world but it is done discreetly and behind closed doors! The first lady's actions rather than portray her as caring and supportive of her husband; portrays her instead as an overbearing and meddlesome. <br /> <br /> It is a difficult time indeed. Bombs going off everywhere, girls being abducted, women coming out to protest, things seem to be falling apart. But the first lady must be dignified, compassionate and composed through it all and despite it all. She must assure us by her composure, as the closest person to our president, that things are under control, that her husband is on top of things, that he is fully in control, that we should not fear and that we should have confidence in him. What her team should not let her do is to come out and show us that things are falling apart, that the center is no longer holding, that Mr President is about to buckle under the pressure. Her handlers should not let her play into the hands of her husbands' distractors just like Hillary did not play into the hands of the Republicans.<br /> <br /> Dame Jonathan, stand by your man just like Hilary before you did, but please stand within the law and stand dignified.

My secretary recounted to me how her family was thrown into chaos and confusion this last Thursday, 1st May 2014, on hearing about the explosion in Nyanyan, she told me how her sister started wailing and rolling on the floor, mourning for her husband, how they were trying to console her, trying to be strong for her. Her husband had gone to attend a function very near where the bomb had exploded and his phone was not going through. And so the family was thrust into panic until their loved one called home. Apparently he was safe and unhurt, thank God. Sigh of relief.<br>
