morning of 22<sup>nd</sup> October 2014, his 76<sup>th</sup> birthday my father
telephoned me and when I saw his number I thought, <i>I should be the one doing the calling</i>, in any case I answered the
call and he said ‘pray for me’ to which I spluttered out a prayer and a
birthday wish but before I could enquire further of him he abruptly ended the
conversation with a promise that we would have a chat later in the evening. I
had a sense that he was in a hurry. Four hours later he had passed on.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%;">You can
imagine my shock. He was not ill, he was looking forward to a dinner party with
family and friends later that evening; the cooking and other celebrations were
on-going when death came calling. The family was stunned; none of us saw this
coming. The futility of life!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%;">As the shock
wore off I began to look on the bright side, he lived a fulfilled life, he was
active to the end with full faculty of body and mind, had many friends and
associates. At 76, one could also say he lived to old age, (perhaps not ripe
enough) he was a father and grandfather.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%;">For me it
was a double </span><span style="line-height: 21.4666652679443px;">whammy</span><span style="line-height: 115%;"> because I had lost my mother the previous year and I never thought I would be involved in planning yet another funeral so soon. My parents
were childhood sweethearts and I believe they are now together, I hope they are
happy now, that for me is the only consolation, my coping mechanism!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%;">The death of
my dad has made me reappraise my life, my whole existence and life purpose, because now I know first-hand, more than most people, that death can come at
any time, regardless of your status, age or circumstances, death cares less! In
the aftermath of my dad’s death we had to decide where to bury him, what kind
of burial service, what to bury him in etc. The irony was not lost on me
because my dad was a simple person who would have wanted none of the fuss, he
would have wanted a very simple burial. I know he would have turned in his
morgue cabinet at the expense we were going to in order to give him a befitting
send off. He would have preferred instead, that we set up an endowment fund in
his memory, with the amount of resources expended for his funeral. Yet I think he would
have been grateful for the outpouring of love from his family, friends and
associates.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%;">The finality
of death is so absolute. Words forever unspoken, hugs never to be shared again,
even disagreements, quarrels and subsequent </span><span style="line-height: 21.4666652679443px;">reconciliation</span><span style="line-height: 115%;">  are never to be had again,  an abrupt end to  memory making!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%;"> As I looked at my dad’s body at the morgue, I
felt an overwhelming feeling of peace, for him and for myself, because he
looked as though he was asleep and could rise at my prompting, but then it
dawned on me that he was asleep never to rise up again in this existence.
Memories of my dad with shaving cream on his face came to my mind, memories of
him fussing on what not to have for breakfast, (he was very health conscious)
memories of us sitting on his bed, chatting till the early hours of the
morning, memories of us walking and me yelling for him to slow down for me to
catch up and memories of him calling out to my daughter from the gate
downstairs and my daughter calling back ‘grandpa!’ I was jolted into the moment
by my cousin, Bolaji, who had accompanied me to see my dad’s body, we said a
prayer and he led me gently outside into the waiting car where I was engulfed
in silence all the way home. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%;">Having seen
his lifeless body and indeed confirmed to myself that my dad was indeed no
more, the realization hit me that he had finished his race here on earth and
that as his first child the baton has now been handed over to me, I must
continue the race, God help me. I choose to continue this race with gratitude,
love, understanding, forgiveness and benevolence, I choose to overlook the
mundane things and focus on what really matters in the final analysis, what really matters when we each answer the
call is the legacy we leave behind. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

A 48 year old activist, Ms Patoo Abraham has led a protest to demand that prostitution be legalized in Nigeria. Ms Abraham who is also the head of the Nigerian chapter of African Sex Workers Alliance (ASWA) said, “Sex work is work, we need our rights. We are tired of dying in silence, we want to be able to practice our profession with pride like every other person. We want an end to name-calling and stigmatization. We are sex workers and not <em>asawo</em>.” She stated further that sex work is normal work and that there are “sex workers everywhere under one form of disguise or the other”. “Government should stop criminalizing our work,” said the woman who is also the president of the Women of Power Initiative (WOPI), a non-governmental organisation established to advance the cause of sex work in Nigeria.</div>

I am very squeamish and hate to see people suffer whilst unable to do anything to alleviate the suffering,  I hate to see people in pain. I hate hospital visits except it’s to welcome a new baby or it is otherwise absolutely necessary. So maybe I am a coward. I have tried over these one hundred days  plus to sideline the issue of the Chibock girls, to avoid it, to pretend it’s not real, perhaps maybe just perhaps it’s not happening, maybe it’s not real, maybe it is my imagination, maybe it will just go away. All these thoughts while I continually say a quiet prayer in my heart for my sisters, my daughters, my mothers:  the Chibock girls. But this morning I was jolted once again by the ugly allegations going back and forth in the media about money being paid to the Chibock families by our President. Some say its N100m yet others say isN22m and of course the Presidency has issued a statement denying it ever ‘paid’ any amount to the families. I say if indeed money exchanged hands its is wrong, cruel and it debases all parties involved. For once, it is not about money, no amount of money can compensate for the tragic situation we find ourselves in, this is blood money and it is too little too late. Money could have helped much earlier to educate and liberate these people who now hold us all to ransom. Money could have helped much earlier to build good roads and infrastructure and provide basic security in chibock and environs to ensure that it never happened in the first place. Money could have helped earlier to ensure that these girls who were apparently writing High School Certificate examinations got proper education and are not semi illiterates unable to speak English language, the medium of our education. Money could have helped much more earlier indeed. Let me say, whoever attempts to get financial benefit off the tragedy of the Chibock girls has their blood on their hands. We hope and pray that these girls are not being sent out on suicide missions as the recent ones in Kano. We continue to pray and hope that these girls will come back to their families, although brutally bruised but alive. In the meantime let no one rub salt into this our collective gaping wound. For once, let us look beyond our own selfish ends and work together to bring home the girls.<br />

He said: "We have only heard stories - no cases have been reported to us." To be part of the group you must be the current personal chef of a head of state, or head chef for venues that host official state receptions. When the chefs met the French President last year he stressed the importance of their job, "If you wreck a dish, it's harder to plead a cause," he said. Hilton Little, the chef to the late President Nelson Mandela said, " The thing about Mr Mandela was that he liked his home comforts, he liked his stews and oxtail like his mother used to make. Every time he said I'd cooked something like his mother would have, I knew my job was safe for another year". If a head of state is being hosted by another head of state, the host chef will call the home chef to find out details such as what their principal likes, in what portion, what time of the day they like to eat, etc. Discretion is as important as culinary skills if a chef wants to stay long in the job.</span></div>

Sanele Masilela, a nine year old boy, from a South African village has married, Shabangu,  a woman in her sixties to 'please their ancestors' and his parents shelled out about $1,700 for the ceremony. The couple first got married last year after Masilela said his dead ancestors told him to. The second ceremony took place on July 12 this year because the boy wanted to make it "official," though members of both families made it clear that the marriage was not legally binding, the pair do not live together and do not have sexual relationship. The wedding was also attended by Shabangu's husband, Alfred Shabangu, who spoke out in support of the wedding. "My kids and I are happy because we don't have a problem with her marrying the boy and I don’t care what other people say,” Shabangu said. Masilela's mother, Patience, defended the wedding, saying "People keep asking will they live together, sleep together, have babies, but I keep telling them that after the wedding, everything went back to normal –- nothing changed," she said. "All this ceremony is for making ancestors happy. We are playing.” Masilela said her son would marry a woman his own age when he got older.</div>

I feel compelled to share this story with you all. I was speaking with a casual acquaintance recently and asked after his wife to which he replied that she was in hospital battling leukemia. It was the last response I expected from him as his wife is an energetic vibrant mother of five whose last born child is only two years old. I asked him how he was coping and if there was anything I could do to help. He asked for my prayers. I wanted to know the hows and the whens. He explained to me that his wife had accompanied her friend to the opticians for an eye test and had decided to have one too as she hadn't had her eyes tested in a long while. She had no aches or pains, nothing what so ever to give her any concern over her health, nothing what so ever, according to her husband. In fact the family was due for their annual holiday a week later. Thus after her friends' test she sat in the seat for her eye test. Soon after the test commenced, the optician started with a barrage of questions, did she have any headaches? did she feel dizzy? did she have fits? and so on. Finally the optician informed her that she needed to go into the hospital immediately as there is a tumor in the back of her eyes, a brain tumor! Her husband was called immediately and he took her to the hospital where further tests confirmed that she did in fact have a brain tumor. She was admitted and eventually also diagnosed with leukemia. She has been in hospital ever since fighting for her life, this was nine months ago. I did not know that an eye test could reveal this much. I reflected on the courage of her husband as he forges ahead into an uncertain future with his five children; I also reflected on the fragility of life, how sometimes our best laid plans can be disrupted by life itself. My thoughts and prayers are with this woman and her family as she fights this battle of her life. I need to book an appointment with my friend, Dr Claire Esenwah of Smilie Opticians here in Abuja FCT. God help us all and keep us well.<br />

Good day, please I need your help urgently. I just sense
that my marriage is at the verge of crumbling and I need to act fast. I have
been married for four years with a set of twin girls to show for it. I have
been a happy mum until recently when I started feeling very uncomfortable with
the closeness between my husband and his ex. They’ve always been close and he
introduced her to me while we were courting as the lady he was to marry, but
the girl’s father was not in support of their relationship so they broke up
after 3years of courtship before I came into the picture. During our courtship
which lasted for 2years, he was still very close to his ex which I really did
not see anything wrong with, he even calls her name whenever he was trying to
talk to me and I felt he will get over it with time. To my greatest amazement,
my husband’s ex who is still not married started visiting us when we moved back
to Lagos (we were in Kano the first 2years of our marriage), to the extent that
my husband allowed her to spend the Easter weekend a few months ago claiming
that she is a family friend. At the moment, their offices are in the same
building on Lagos island and he keeps talking about her much more than
necessary. Now he comes very late and looks too withdrawn from me and the kids.

However, I did have a brief affair with an ex of mine around the time our second son was born and now he is looking more and more like my ex and I am convinced that he is in fact my ex's son. My sister even recently called my attention to the fact of the resemblance between my son and my ex and I confessed to her about the affair. I know it would break my husbands heart and our marriage if it turns out that my second son is not my husbands' and he finds out; my other worry is that my ex could come after me to lay claim to his son if he also finds out. Having not sat to watch a movie in a rather long time and being an avid 'Afro-Passionista.' I was delighted to find on a recent long haul flight that one of the movies available under the 'latest' selection was '12 Years As A Slave' featuring the beautiful and elegant Lupita Nyong'o<b>. </b>As soon as I settled in my seat and I was served a nice drink, I selected the movie and watched it unfold.<span style="background-color: white; color: #252525; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.399999618530273px;"> </span>I am Afrocentric. Yes black is beautiful, Africa and Africans have got soul! I have been fascinated by this latest  global Afrocentric phenomenon, Lupita Luongo, I think she epitomizes African beauty. She is gorgeous and all natural. I had read about her success both in the movie industry and the modelling industry and I believe she is a positive role model for African women, especially the young generation who rarely have their beauty showcased and celebrated. She has talent too, having won an Oscar for her supporting role in this movie. No doubt she is an accomplished actress with extensive training. As the story line unfolded, the taste in my mouth grew sour. This movie is humiliating, it does not tell us anything we do not already know about slavery, about how black people were dehumanized and abused. We know all that. So what is the point of this movie? From the beginning to the sordid end it ridiculed black people, it put us down several centuries and took us to a place we want to forget but are never allowed to, through the continuous constant oppression and rape of Africa by the rest of the world. There was nothing positive about that movie. Lupita is a fine actress, but she was totally humiliated and ridiculed in that movie. Yes I know it was acting but the line was so so blurred this time around. There was no need for that nude scene other than to feed into the sadistic fetishness of some people, no wonder at all about the Oscar prize. There is no need to keep taking us back to those places that we left ages ago and would rather leave to history. Even if these stories need to be told for what ever reasons, let them be told in dignity. We want the pride of Africa and Africans restored and films like '12 Years As A Slave' do nothing for the cause. And why is it that black women only win Oscars when they take on roles that trivializes their femininity and humiliate their race? Halle Berry famously won an Oscar for her role as a black sex play thing in 'Monster's ball'. Yes this movie was adapted from a true story written by a 'free' black man who was captured and sold into slavery for twelve years. This is one true story that did not need to be made into yet another visual orgy of the degradation and humiliation of black people. The power of imagery is so profound and black people do not need to add these kind of images to the burden we already carry as disenfranchised inhabitants of the center of the world, AFRICA.
